Catherine Humphreys - Owner
Operating a child care centre requires a unique balance between business principles and a warm, loving, fun and educational place for children. My name is Catherine Humphreys and I have been in the child care field for over 30 years. In 1981 I started Alpha Child Care Ltd. Over the years it has grown and now accommodates approximately 183 children. My partner and my son, Greg, and I employ and work with approximately 40 child care professionals. Child care is a complicated and ever-changing business. It is imperative that we stay informed about new trends in early childhood education and often take the industry lead in child care development. We participate in and maintain membership in several child care organizations. As a result of our leadership role in Peel's child care field we have been asked to consult and advise on new and unusual situations for many other child care operators across the province. Our commitment to you and your family is to provide the highest standard of child care for your children in a safe and nurturing environment.
Greg Humphreys - Owner
Welcome to a new school year at Alpha Child Care! My name is Greg Humphreys and I am one of the owners of Alpha which is 26 years old this year. When Alpha opened its doors in 1981, I can remember organizing all my school friends to help with assembling equipment and distributing flyers to local houses and apartments. Since then I have graduated Central Peel Secondary School and graduated with my Specialized Honors Degree from York University. In 26 years I have progressed from cleaning the day care after school to being part owner of the company.
You will usually find me at the office working on staff development, budgets, payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, lease issues, advertising and other miscellaneous office duties. I regularly drop in to our two day care locations to do repairs and improvements and talk with staff and parents.
Maintaining quality care is my number one priority since there is nothing more important to me than the health and safety of your child(ren). I believe that all the Alpha staff provide a unique family environment for your child(ren) that distinguishes us from other day cares. It is a great honor working with our staff who care for your children as if they were their own. Alpha is continuously training and coaching staff to be the best they can. I believe that our focus on staff development is the reason why we have such low staff turnover and consequently, why our program is of such high-quality.
I look forward to growing with you.
Mary Soundy - Manager of Operations and Development
My name is Mary Soundy and I am the Manager of Operations and Development for Alpha Child Care. My major responsibilities consist of strategic planning, staff training, quality control and the day to day operations of the Springdale location.
I received my Early Childhood Education diploma in 1978 from Sheridan College. I also received my B. A. in psychology through continuing education in 2000 from York University. Since graduating from college I have taught in two other child care centres before joining Alpha in 1988. Alpha Child Care has given me many opportunities to grow and develop as I have advanced from teacher to supervisor to manager in the twenty one years that I have been employed with the company. When first joining the Alpha team I was the teacher/Supervisor at the Cathedral Road location until August 1996 at which time I transferred to the new Springdale location in which I supervise. In 2005 I also took on the role as Manager of the company.
These positions have led me to several different avenues within the field as I am involved with many of it's organizations. I have served as chair of the annual Trade Show for the Region of Peel. This entails organizing a full day, in which vendors selling child care toys and equipment as well as other agencies associated with the child care field try to reach out to all child care centres to inform them of their purpose. I also attend the monthly SPRING meetings which keep everyone in the child care field a breast of the happenings within the Region. I am also a member of the Brampton Supervisory Networking Group that meets once every three months to discuss the challenges that supervisors face in the day to day operation of a child care centre. I serve as chair of Raising the Bar Advisory Committee for the Region of Peel. And most recently I am involved in the Mentoring Pairs Program for the Region of Peel.
My philosophy is that each child is a unique individual and develops at their own pace. Next to health and safety, self esteem, social skills and having the confidence to handle any situation that may arise, are the most important aspects and the necessary components needed to build a solid foundation. It is with this foundation that the children contribute to society in a constructive manner. With good self esteem and social skills children will seek learning, will love to try new activities and will feel confident handling any challenges that come with learning in a multi cultural world. Since each child is unique and individual it is our responsibility as the Early Childhood Educators to provide and set up an interesting and exciting environment in which the children build on what they are already capable of doing and what interests the children. Therefore, the children are having fun but learning without even knowing it, all of which is done within a caring, loving family atmosphere.
I look forward to serving all the Alpha families. If you have any questions, concerns or want to share your great ideas with me, my door is always open. I can be reached at the Springdale location 905-458-4884 or by email springdale1@idirect.ca. You can also leave a message with your supervisor and she would be more than happy to relay it to me.
